Sony VAIO W (VPCW115XG) Review;Sony VGP-BPS18 battery

I think all netbooks have roughly the same specifications featuring the standard Atom N280 processor, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 and perhaps even the harddrive capacity or the 10″ wide screen. When I choose a netbook, I go for the battery life and the looks of it.

Build and Design

The Eee PC 1000HA has a much newer look compared to the original Eee PC 701, with better looking glossy painted surfaces and smoother edges. The overall color pattern is very consistent, with the keyboard and touchpad matching the body color, and brushed metal trim all around the netbook. Compared to other netbooks such as the MSI Wind, the Eee PC 1000HA feels chunky, but some of that is related to the stock 6-cell battery.

Build quality is excellent, with solid plastic making up the body of the 1000HA. It feels rugged enough to withstand the abuse of day to day use, but the glossy finish will show minor scratches and fingerprints. The screen cover does a good job with protecting the LCD panel and with a strong squeeze the panel only shows small area of distortion. Flex in the palmrest is almost nonexistent, but this is quite common on small notebooks since the inside s are packed tight.

For user-serviceable components the ASUS Eee PC 1000HA is very upgrade friendly. A single panel houses the hard drive, wireless card, and single ram slot, making the process of swapping out the parts as painless as possible. Another item worth mentioning is the lack of “Warranty void if removed” sticker on that panel. “Warranty void if removed” sticker on that panel. 4 300x225 ASUS Eee PC 1000HA Review;Eee Pc 1000HE Batteries

Display

The 10” LED-backlit display found on the Eee PC 1000HA is easy on the eyes, and a real treat to view for hours on end. Whites are clear, colors are vibrant, and backlit levels are very bright and consistent. While many netbooks get the short end of the stick for some components such as processing power, they easily make up for it in screen quality. The panels found on most netbooks offer better viewing angles and brighter backlight levels. Vertical viewing angles which tend to quickly invert colors on full-size notebooks stay accurate longer on the display found on the 1000HA. Horizontal angles are the same way, allowing the user to easily share a movie with a passenger on either side.

The only real downfall these smaller screens have is limited resolution, which can often causes problems with some applications that require minimum resolutions for menu screens. You can get past this with scaling or screen scrolling, but it is just a downside to the limited screen size in general.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is comfortable to type on, but more cramped than one found on a full-size notebook. Key spacing is average for a 10” subnotebook and listed as 95% the size of generic keyboard. Once you get the hang of the layout it doesn’t take long to type at a good pace. Key action is smooth with just a little pressure required to trigger a key. Key wiggle is minimal, meaning the keys stay planted in one place even if you move your fingers side to side on the key pads.

9 300x225 ASUS Eee PC 1000HA Review;Eee Pc 1000HE Batteries

The touchpad is an Elantech model which presented a few quirks in the Windows XP environment. The cursor movement had a bit of lag between the time when your finger moved on the touchpad surface and the cursor started to move on the screen. Another problem that got old very quick is the multitouch surface incorrectly sensing pressure from my palm and fingertip at the same time, causing multitouch features to activate. While good in theory, the notebook lagged when scrolling or zooming webpages in IE, so each time one of these features activated the notebook would freeze until it completed its motion.

Should I Remove the Laptop Battery For A Desktop Replacement Laptop?

Many of us use our laptops as you do–as our primary computer, always plugged in. If your laptop is capable of being powered by the AC adapter alone (without the battery in), then for best battery life, it may make sense to remove the battery when your laptop is plugged in, depending on your circumstances.
When to remove the laptop battery
HP suggests a two-week rule of thumb for when to remove the battery from your laptop and put it into storage. Remove the laptop battery when:

Your laptop is going to be off for two weeks (for example, put into storage or if your laptop is seldomly used).
You use your laptop plugged in (to a electrical outlet or docked in a docking station) continuously for two weeks or more, as most people do with desktop replacement laptops.

The reason for this is that laptop batteries can age more quickly when they’re fully charged and hot for long periods of time. High heat and laptop overheating is one of the worst things for all of the laptop’s hardwware parts, including the battery. And as you probably already know, laptops tend to get very hot. Some intensive usage can drive up the amount of heat your laptop produces. If you often use your laptop for high-powered tasks like game playing and multimedia editing, remove the battery to protect it from the heat.
How to store your laptop battery
The most common recommendation for laptop battery storage is to have it charged to about 40% (or somewhere between 30% and 50%) and then keep it in a dry place. HP recommends a storage temperature of 68 and 77 degrees Farenheit (20 to 25 degreesn Celsius)–not too hot and not too cold. (Some people keep batteries in the fridge, but you have to take care that the battery isn’t exposed to humidity and that you warm it up to room temperature before using it, which could be more hassle than it’s worth.)
Other Options
If your laptop doesn’t get too hot–find out how to check your laptop temperature–during normal usage, you should be fine with keeping the battery in the laptop. You could also use your current battery in your laptop continuously, as you’re doing now, and when the battery naturally no longer holds a charge for very long (batteries lose capacity over time gradually), buy a spare new battery. Keep the old one in your laptop and store the new one as above for when you need to take your laptop out and about.

About Battery Failure and Adapter to be hot

Battery manufactures use capacityto specify battery performance, and a new battery should have 100 percent. This means that a 2Ah battery should deliver two amperes for one hour. If the battery quits after 30 minutes, then the capacity is only 50 percent. Manufacturers use capacity to specify warranty obligations. Depending on chemistry and application, the warranty threshold is set between 70 and 80 percent of the specified full capacity.

How does the user know when to claim warranty failure on a battery, or when to replace a pack that no longer performs as expected? Battery replacement has been an ongoing problem and the lack of easy-to-use testing procedures is in part to blame. On one hand, an aging battery may be kept too long until it begins affecting operation, while on the other hand perfectly good batteries are being replaced because of equipment problems or operator misapprehension. This commonly occurs with consumer products under warranty, especially cell phones. If the charge on a cell phone does not hold, the user naturally blames the battery when in many cases the fault lies in the device.
HomeBanner discount About Battery Failure and Adapter to be hot
Cell phone manufacturers say that 90 percent of batteries returned under warranty have no problem, and tests conducted in the Cadex laboratories confirm this finding. Many storefronts replace the batteries on the faintest complaint, and this frivolous battery return policy costs the manufacturers millions of dollars per year. Unrealistic expectations, perceived performance loss and lack of practical testing equipment contribute to this wasteful battery exchange behavior.

Asus Eee PC 1011CX and A32-1015 battery review

With the increasing popularity of the multitude of smartphones and tablets available, netbooks have started playing a diminishing role. It’s true that netbooks may soon go the way of the dodo bird in the face of affordable Ultrabooks, but that is not enough to prevent at least a few manufacturers from releasing new netbook models. The Asus Eee PC 1011CX is the Taiwanese manufacturer’s latest netbook sporting the same seashell design case but with Intel’s latest Atom CPU, the third generation Cedarview N2600. This dual-core CPU operates at 1.6GHz and integrates a GMA 3600 GPU. Otherwise, the specs are standard netbook fare with 1GB DDR3 RAM, 320GB HDD and WLAN functionality.

The changes to the new model are marginal and don’t stand out straight away, such as the missing maintenance panel on the bottom, the permanently soldered RAM, or the passive cooling system – more on this in the review. From a price perspective, the new legacy netbook is within the usual range of 299 Euros (RRP) ($390 USD), although it has to compete with even more affordable tablets in some regions.

How to test the actual capacity of the battery

he traditional charge/discharge/charge cycle still offers a dependable way to measure battery capacity. Alternative methods have been tried but none deliver reliable readings. Inaccuracies have led users to adhere to the proven discharge methods even if the process is time-consuming and removes the battery from service for the duration of the test.

HomeBanner 1 How to test the actual capacity of the battery

While portable batteries can be discharged and recharged relatively quickly, a full discharge and recharge on large lead acid batteries gets quite involved, and service personnel continue to seek faster methods even if the readings are less accurate. This section explains what’s available in new technologies, but first we look at the discharge method more closely.

How to store laptop batteries

The recommended storage temperature for most batteries is 15°C (59°F); the extreme allowable temperature is –40°C to 50°C (–40°C to 122°F) for most chemistries. While lead acid must always be kept at full charge during storage, nickel- and lithium-based chemistries should be stored at around a 40 percent state-of-charge (SoC). This level minimizes age-related capacity loss while keeping the battery in operating condition and allowing self-discharge.

Finding the 40 percent SoC level is difficult because the open circuit voltage (OCV) of batteries does not lend itself well to state-of-charge estimations. For lack of better methods, voltage is nevertheless used as a rough fuel gauge indicator. The SoC of Li-ion is roughly 50 percent at 3.80V/cell and 40 percent at 3.75V/cell. Allow Li-ion to rest 90 minutes after charge or discharge before taking the voltage reading to get equilibrium.

SoC on nickel-based batteries is especially difficult to measure. A flat discharge curve, agitation after charge and discharge, and voltage change on temperature contribute to the fluctuations. Since no other estimation tool exists that is practical, and the charge level for storage is not all too critical for this chemistry, simply apply some charge if the battery is empty, and then make sure that the battery is kept in a cool and dry storage.

Safety issues of lithium battery

Safety is a sensitive issue that gets much media and legal attention, especially with Li-ion batteries. Any energy storage device carries a risk, and in the 1800s steam engines exploded and people got hurt. Carrying highly flammable gasoline in cars was a hot topic in the early 1900s. Battery makers are obligated to meet safety requirements, but less reputable firms may cheat — it’s “buyers be beware!” Most OEMs use only Li-ion batteries that comply with one or several safety standards.

Lithium-ion has a high specific energy and even though safe, high usage by millions of consumers is bound to generate 11 300x236 Safety issues of lithium batteryfailures. In 2006, a one-in-200,000 breakdown triggered a recall of almost six million lithium-ion packs. Heat-related battery failures are taken very seriously, and manufacturers choose a conservative approach. Let’s examine this closer.

Sony, the maker of the lithium-ion cells in question, points out that on rare occasions microscopic metal particles may come into contact with other parts of the battery cell, leading to a short circuit within the cell. Battery manufacturers strive to minimize the presence of such particles; however, complex assembly techniques make the elimination of all metallic dust nearly impossible. Cells with ultra-thin separators of only 20–25µm are more susceptible to impurities than the older designs with lower Ah ratings. Whereas the 1,350mAh cell in the 18650 package could tolerate the nail penetration test, the high-density 2,400mAh becomes a bomb when performing the same test. New safety standards are more lifelike and the UL1642 Underwriters Laboratories (UL) test no longer mandates nail penetration for safety acceptance of lithium-based batteries.
